what is best dd to choose from?

ummm I had no idea where to post this so I decided to call it "f*ck it" and post this thread up..

Wanting to know for myself and if some others, what is the best import out there that could handle both the harsh summer and the winter?
year, make, model, type of engine, type of diff. (fwd, rwd, etc...)

Please, reasonable answer and don't be a dick!!

I was thinking accord around the 96 and up or a subaru impreza, but i don't know anything about subaru and they're engines...

If anyone could help out, ill appreciate it

What is your budget?
Do you have to transport any kids in it?
How reliable should it be?

Help us help you!

Re: what is best dd to choose from?

well its obvious that an awd platform will help substantially but haveing a good set of tyres really makes a world of difference. I'v been through snow in a Del Sol, EG, Neon, EP3 and they are all horrible in the snow compared to my current subaru. but i never once got stuck in any of the previous cars and the hondas were dumped all the way down on ebay coilovers. It all has to do with good tyres and driving style.

get a good set of tyres and drive carefully. drive like a jackass on ice/snow and you will end up in a ditch no matter what you drive.

hope that helps.

on a reliability stand point. whenever you buy a used car, its a risk. the previous owner may have "just changed the oil and brakes" but you will never know how it was driven previously. thats why its always best to look it over as good as you can before you buy. also once you do purchase it, make sure you have money left over to do a good tune up to nip things in the butt right off the bat: oil change/filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, thermostat, air filter if needed, check belts also.

i'm sure i forgot a few things but you get the idea

I have a very nice Mirage for sale right now. Incredible daily driver. Get's around great in the snow, AC/Heat/Power Windows/Locks/Cruise Control. 5 Speed.

Great price too!

dumb thread, there is no "best" one. they are far too similar to make a big difference.

Most cars are designed to be driven all year in almost an climate imaginable. Just get some good tires and drive the bastard.

Civic Si with snow tires was my fave dd.

Re: what is best dd to choose from?

ooh ooh - I love my SI so far. I seem to get 27 mpg and I VTAAAAAAAAAAK several times any chance I get. Bluetooth, XM - its really pretty impressive. So, thats a daily driver you can put on your list.

Re: what is best dd to choose from?

If my Legacy wagon got the same MpG as my old EG hatch did, I'd say one of those. Boxers are extremely easy to learn/work on. But the older ones, expect low 20's mpg. I miss the efficiency of the E-Vtec in my old VX swap. So my personal opinion is a Civic VX. Never did bad in the snow neither

I have a 2000 Subaru that I daily drive. I was kinda worried about about the drivetrain, but the sohc seem to last. Plus it's really easy to work on.

treat it like any car, oil change every 3-5K or every 3 months. timing belt tensioners and water pump every 90k. just treat it like any other car.

^^^^^ hit the nail right on the head.

havn't heard of any recals. You'll run into problems sooner or later like any other car, i think the key to keeping a car reliable is preventative maintanence. just always keeping an eye on all the systems and fix it before it becomes a problem.

I don't know of any recalls, the early ones, especially the dohc cars had head gasket problems, but that was more or less fixed in 99. Other than that they are reliable.

My 2.5 rs gets a little over 29mpg combined, but that might have something to do with my driving style as the cars are rated a fair amount lower.

corollas/prizms under the year 98 very reliable cars. I also think accords are really reliable. theres lots of good cars out there it also depends on how you maintain them and abuse them.
