Default 01-02 CIVIC/RSX Front LCA Bushing install

Well boys and girls, I am at it again as usual...lol I am here bringing you yet another DIY for all you guys who love to save your pennies......and those that want to see how it can be done.

For starters, I highly recommend that before doing this DIY you and possibly a buddy get some Prozac and beer.......will ensure you stay calm and somewhat focused on this..

The 01-02 civic/rsx front lower control arms both share the same lovely stock LCA bushings that tend to crack over just a short time and break. Luckily the aftermarket industry as usual developed replacements that both help your wallet and the handling of your car.

The kit can be purchased online for the wonderful price of around $60.00 and will cover both sides of the car. Pictured below is the kit with the part number and vehicle fitment..............I'd like to thank my little buddy Trung (Trung2003 here on the forum) for letting us use his vehicle as our test subject.

Now, I hope that anyone trying this knows they are going to do this at their own risk and that we won't be held liable for damage done or personal injury.........if you are afraid to do this just give us a call!!

To start as always follow recommended guidelines to raising your car etc. so it won't fall on ya!! Support vehicle on stands and take the wheels off...blah blah blah

The next step is to locate all the bolts you will need to take out in order for the LCA to come out. picture below has all of them pointed out in the red/blue arrows.

For this one, once you have removed the cotter pin and nut off the assembly......make sure to give it the shocker treatment...lol....no, not the two in the pink one in the stink......but the hammer shocker. As precise as you can hit the arm just above where the nut you took off is located.......a few good wacks should dissengage the arm from the ball joint.
FYI:if you miss and hit the ball joint, you may cause it to rip and the install will now need a ball joint!! lol

next, remove the LCA from the vehicle and you are ready for the ride of your life!!

Here is what the kit comes with............the instructions are easy and with this DIY you can easily see what you need to do. I have taken the time to also show you how to do this all without a torch or a press...........but for cheating purposes I used a press to get them out quicker...lol

You'll need to mark the direction as to where the bushing is facing. How you do this is simply by looking at the bushing..........it will have a small arrow pointing towards where the new setup will be facing. Normally when installing a new stock bushing, the arrow will be easy to figure out. On the new setup though there are no arrows so a nice mark will have to do. Place the new bushing over the old and mark both the LCA and the new bushing.

As for the other one you will notice that the bushing on the LCA has a metal lip and on the new one it has one side bigger then the other.....all you do is make sure the new one goes in the same way as the old.....keep in mind all the metal surrounding the old bushing will be gone....you'll see that on the next steps.

Ok, here is where the beer will come in handy........lol......it should keep you feeling good enough to do this..... ha ha

Now most folks out there have tried many ways to get LCA bushings out........methods such as Torching them work beautifuly except the smell and smoke will cause you to never want to do this. Getting them pressed out at a machine shop is the other way....making it just a little too expensive for my taste. The other way is to just bring it over to me..........since I've got a way I been doing these for years that seems to work just as good. My method is a little more time consuming but it enables you to still get the bushing out. If you are not wanting to do this step, my setup at the shop can accomodate you very well.............this way all you really need to do is work on getting them back on the vehicle. My fees are affordable and save you a ton of headaches in the end.........if not just bring the whole vehicle to me, I'm not a afraid to do this at all.

Pictured below are the steps to getting the bushing out of the LCA and getting everything ready for the new ones to go in.

For an easy deal, I used my press to get the center out of both bushings (you'll also notice that on the pic below I marked a spot that you need to cut out so you can cut the metal sleeve easier):

Next the other bushing with the lip will be a little more painful but easy in the end. This bushing has a lip that must be cut off as well so the whole thing comes out from either direction (in case you can't fit it on the press very well).

Now how I managed to take the lip off that thing was simple..........just take a grinder and go around the center to remove some metal off it and weaken it a bit. This in turn causes the lip to just come right off when you chisel it out...the end result is what you'll have left.

This next step is very important as it will deal with getting the metal sleeve off the control arm. NOW, I WARN YOU IN ADVANCE.........if this is done wrong you can damage a ton of stuff.......so please look at the pictures and follow along.

As you can tell I've cut out a small section of rubber so i can see the metal sleeve a bit better. Using a saw make a cut straight across the inside of the sleeve, make sure you don't cut past it..........otherwise you'll just keep cutting into the control arm. I've done these soooooooo many times I am a master at it and only seem to only cut into the arm just a little bitty....lol

Anyone trying this needs to have a good eye and know when to stop. Keep in mind also where it is I am making the cut....towards the thickest part of the LCA.......not the opposite end.....which can destroy the arm if done that way.

Now, once you have made a good cut on that sleeve you can take a chisel and hammer and start hammering. Keep in mind the direction you are going to hammer in the pic and also be patient with this step.......may take ya awhile if you are new to this all. As for me I only chisel off a small section of it and the rest I leave for the press.......it likes to make this simple.

The end results speak for themselves........I only managed to put a tiny bit of a cut on the ends of the smaller bushing and one on the larger side (both are marked with arrows)........but nothing went all the way through. If done the right way that bushing comes out like its nothing.

Once all has been cut and taken out..........slip some of the provided grease onto the bushing and stick this on a bench press or shop press to get the new bushings in. I didn't have pictures of this step because it is difficult to hold a camera while other shit is falling....lol....on my foot to be more exact!!!!

Sooo, the end result should look like the picture below and all cleaned up as well:

Now, all you do is reverse the installation...........but there is a catch!!! If you remember from above I said you needed some Prozac........well that is because now with the new bushings you will need to put more force into it and your patience will run out. lol
Getting these suckers into their stock holding plates absolutely sucks and you will need either Prozac or tons of patience. The most difficult part is aligning the bolt on the smaller bushing......then once you got it jack the lower arm upwards so that the front bushing slips through. Once all is aligned and bolts are in make sure the sway bar end link is also bolted down. I also helped the arm by spraying lubricant around so the bushing wouldn't fight against me and a hammer to tap it in.

Last, just make sure all is secure and to the right torque specs so nothing falls off your ride!!

so there you are..............that is the whole process and one that I can only put into one word "DAMN"....lol

Anyone wanting this service done feel free to get a hold of me, it'll be much easier then busting your own knuckles. Otherwise I am always available to press stuff out/in if you don't want to get charged for the entire install.......which is still pretty cheap either way!!!

THANK YOU GUYS AND ENJOY!!

Thanks for the DIY...
How do you know when to replace the bushings?
My ride quality has been poor compared to when I first got my RSX.
I was thinking maybe the bushings are worn out?

You are most welcome!

Now, if you look at the 6th picture here you will see the rubber torn from the center sleeve. This is generally the best sign to go by since it tells you right away how bad they are. You will sometimes notice some cracking on the rubber after a few years which can spell out trouble down the line.

Now, you can honestly change these bushings on ANY vehicle at any given time......as long as they are available in the urethane style. To me replacing these back with OEM is truly a bad idea unless there is nothing available for them. In most cases folks out there put OEM back because that is all they know and are not into our hobby.

I can assure you 100% that most of the ride quality lost happens because of a few things people neglect. One are the bushings on lower LCA's and second are Balljoints, which most people fix after they see they are torn or come apart and leave them stranded. Third one is the most common, blown shocks/struts on lowering springs.:thumbsdow:

On Trung's car above I managed to do his lower balljoints just recently and had noticed the torn bushings on the LCA's. He wanted me to find the price on OEM bushings or the entire control arm, which either way cost too damn much. So, just a little research and BAM.....I found these for him and they became cheaper then OEM. In the end I received a PM from him stating "Rodnie, you have made me love my car all over again!!"

I suggest if you do this that you find the right venues to make it easy to install and also double check your balljoints for any bad signs.

Hit me up sometime and I may be able to do this for you at a very reasonable price!!

Thank you thank you...........just like to make sure that if people are gonna try something new they don't end up damaging their car or wallets. Plus in the end, this is a hobby that a lot of peole want to get into but don't know how to go about doing.....or don't have a lot of money for.

That's where I come in and make it affordable and also a learning experience!!! This industry (although most think it is dying) can continue for many years to come as long as we keep feeding it knowledge!
